Rhytidectomy (or facelift) can improve the appearance of the face by correcting deep lines and folds and the sagging of the tissues of the face. Excess skin and fat are removed in order to improve the jawline and neck and better contour the cheek and chin area. A facelift does not stop the aging process or remove every deep wrinkle but it can take years off a patient and improve the appearance.
Incisions are made which are hidden in the hairline and around the ears. The skin and underlying tissues are lifted, tightened and secured. All incisions are closed with fine sutures or staples once the skin has been redraped.
Various techniques in facelifts exist which are done either under anesthesia or in the office. These can be catered to the patient depending on the patient's individual needs and lifestyle. One of the most popular techniques is a mini facelift which can be done under local anesthesia. The patient gains in appearance with significantly less swelling and bruising than a traditional facelift. Additionally, because the procedure can be done with local anesthesia, there is cost saving and time saving as the patient does not incur the extra cost or recovery time from the anesthetic.
